En 1867 paraît Thérèse Raquin qui fait scandale pour la noirceur de l’histoire et le caractère dépravé de ses personnages. Ce roman jette surtout les prémices du mouvement naturaliste, qui associe au récit une étude quasi scientifique du comportement humain. L’Assommoir, septième roman du cycle des Rougon-Macquart, publié en 1877 est son premier grand succès littéraire. En 1894, l’affaire du capitaine Dreyfus éclate et divise la France et Émile Zola prend sa défense dans un article historique, J’accuse … ! publié dans l’Aurore et qui lui vaut une condamnation pour diffamation le poussant à l’exil.
