Après une licence de lettres à la Sorbonne, Irène Némirovsky épouse Michel Epstein, un homme d'affaires russe, et donne naissance à deux filles, Denise et Élisabeth. Son premier roman, Le Malentendu, paraît en 1923, suivi en 1929 par David Golder, adapté au cinéma et au théâtre, puis Le Bal en 1930 dont l'adaptation cinématographique révélera Danielle Darrieux. Elle fréquente les milieux littéraires et se lie d'amitié avec Kessel et Cocteau. Jusqu'en 1940, la parution des romans et nouvelles - dont Films parlés en 1934 - se poursuit régulièrement et avec succès. Pourtant en 1938, la nationalité française est refusée à sa famille et l'horizon s'obscurcit à nouveau. Victime de l' aryanisation de l'édition, Irène n'a plus le droit de publier sous son nom tandis que Michel, son mari, se voit interdit d'exercer sa profession. Par mesure de sécurité, Irène et Michel envoient leurs filles loin de Paris avant de les rejoindre en 1941 après la promulgation des lois antijuives. C'est à Issy-l'Évêque, un petit village du Morvan, qu'Irène Némirovsky, persuadée qu'elle vit ses derniers jours, écrit Suite française. Malheureusement, l'histoire lui donne raison : elle est arrêtée en juillet 1942 et déportée à Auschwitz où elle meurt du typhus. Son mari, lui aussi déporté, est gazé. Ce n'est qu'en 2004 que leur fille Denise reprend le manuscrit de Suite française qu'elle avait conservé précieusement et décide de le publier.
