In it, Sartre offers nothing less than a brilliant and radical account of the human condition. The English philosopher and novelist Iris Murdoch wrote to a friend of "the excitement - I remember nothing like it since the days of discovering Keats and Shelley and Coleridge". What gives our lives significance, Sartre argues in Being and Nothingness, is not pre-established for us by God or nature but is something for which we ourselves are responsible. Combining this with the unsettling view that human existence is characterized by radical freedom and the inescapability of choice, Sartre introduces us to a cast of ideas and characters that are part of philosophical legend: anguish; the 'bad faith' of the memorable waiter in the cafâe; sexual desire; and the 'look' of the other, brought to life by Sartre's famous description of someone looking through a keyhole. Above all, by arguing that we alone create our values and that human relationships are characterized by hopeless conflict, Sartre paints a stark and controversial picture of our moral universe and one that resonates strongly today. This new translation includes a helpful Translator's Introduction, notes on the translation, a comprehensive index and a foreword by Richard Moran."--Provided by publisher.

Author: Jean-Paul Sartre (all their books in stock)
Format: Paperback
Published: 2021
Pages: 928
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1982105453

Yasanmayan Zaman, cagimiza damgasini vurmus buyuk Fransiz yazari ve dusunuru Jean-Paul Sartre'in, edebiyat alaninda kaleme aldigi yapitlari arasinda cok buyuk bir yeri olan ozgurluk Yollari baslikli uclemesinin ikinci kitabi. Spanning the years 1940-1963, these letters describe Sartre's war - as a soldier, a prisoner of the Germans, and a man of the Resistance - and chart his path to fame with the publication of his major works. From September 1939 to June 1940, Sartre wrote Beauvoir almost daily from the front as he waited for the Germans to attack. It was a time of great productivity for Sartre, as he wrote the novel The Age of Reason and sketched out Being and Nothingness. In late 1940, he wrote his first play while interned in a German prison camp. The letters after his release reveal the wartime uncertainties and delays in securing a production of The Flies, an existential retelling of the Oresteia with a thinly veiled protest against acquiescence toward the German occupation. After 1942 there are fewer letters, as the couple was less often apart, but extraordinary ones. In almost every one, there is mention of a new play, novel, or essay underway. In 1946, Sartre writes Beauvoir from New York, where No Exit has opened and he is the toast of the town: "Here it is the same as in Paris: everyone is talking about me and everywhere I'm dragged through the mud"; and in 1959, from the Irish estate of John Huston, where the two men were working on a film about Freud. The collection ends in 1963, with a simple statement written by Beauvoir after Sartre's death and shortly before her own: "This letter is the last that received from Sartre. Thereafter, during our brief separations, we used the telephone." Quiet Moments in a War completes the extraordinary correspondence of one of modern history's most celebrated couples, and documents the emergence of a great intellectual figure.

Author: Jean-Paul Sartre (all their books in stock)
Format: Paperback
Published: 1995
Pages: 320
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 9780140235890

Author: Jean-Paul Sartre (all their books in stock)
Format: Paperback
Published: 1982
Pages: 224
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 0140481729

Nausea is the story of Antoine Roquentin, a French writer who is horrified at his own existence. Outstripping in scope and magnitude his previous plays, this dramatic epic, which calls for a cast of over ninety and takes some four hours to perform, is a synthesis of the basic tenets of Sartre's philosophy. It is based on the Peasants' Revolt in fourteenth-century Germany, a period that he considers closer to the modern epoch than any other; and through the actions of his protagonist, Goetz, the bastard son of a noble, Sartre demonstrates man's inability to achieve the absolute either through good or evil.In Kean Sartre has done more than rewrite the play by Alexandre Dumas père , (which was in turn an adaptation of an 1836 play by Théaulon, inspired by the career of the English actor Edmund Kean). Sartre has re-created the drama, and in his version the original flamboyance of character and situation embodies as well as a serious moral issue. Fast-paced and witty, his Kean is at the same time a thoughtful and subtle play about the question of emotional sincerity.Nekrassov , a political satire in the form of a farce, is a lampoon of anti-communist journalism in France. Revolving around a master swindler who impersonates a famous escapee from Soviet terror, the play abounds in comic situations and bristles with topical allusions. Sartre is not only having fun here reducing to an absurdity the extreme anti-communist position, but Nekrassov is further evidence of his versatility and theatrical
