My Life as a Newsman

During a career spanning more than forty years, the award-winning journalist and broadcaster Robin Lustig has lived in, worked in and reported from more than eighty countries. Now, in Is Anything Happening?, he tells the inside story of the triumphs and disasters he experienced along the way. He describes coming under fire in Pakistan and crashing the bongs of Big Ben on Remembrance Sunday. He was in Berlin on the day Germany was re-unified, and in Moscow for the final day of the Soviet Union. He also met some of the world's most revered, and reviled, political leaders, from Nelson Mandela to the 'butcher of Bosnia', Radovan Karadzic. And Lustig famously presented a special news programme covering the sudden death of Diana, Princess of Wales, just hours after the announcement was made. In this highly personal memoir, both funny and poignant, Lustig describes growing up as the son of refugees from Nazi Germany, retracing the journeys of his immigrant forebears, and standing on the very spot where his grandmother was murdered by a Nazi death squad in 1941. After more than thirty years of reporting from and about the Middle East - including three years based in Jerusalem for The Observer - he reflects on the continuing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians and reaches a startling and controversial conclusion: that the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 may well have been a mistake for both Jews and non-Jews.

Format: Hardback
Published: 2017
Pages: 416
Publisher: Biteback Publishing Limited
ISBN: 9781785901034
