Dr. Haber cooperated with the Nazis, preparing lists for the Gestapo. The family was forced into the ghetto in August 1942, but enjoyed special privileges. Ben-Dor discusses the role of Jewish collaborators in the ghetto, as well as in the camps, bemoaning their lack of Jewish values. In July 1944 the Habers were transported by boat to Stutthof. Ben-Dor's mother and brother were sent to Auschwitz and killed; Ben-Dor was sent to Kaufering; his father, whom he despised, became a kapo at one of the Kaufering camps and was shot by Allied planes during an evacuation.
