1915 fut pour Fritz Haber une année fatidique, lorsque le 22 avril il lança son ordre de lâcher la première attaque aux gaz sur le front belge.
1915 fut aussi pour ses amis et coreligionnaires comme Enstein, Walter Rathenau ou encore Haim Weizmann, l'année de toutes les contradictions. Empètrée dans le plus terrible des conflits internationaux, embrumée dans les miasmes d'une idéologie nationaliste ainsi que par une antisémitisme nouvellement exacerbé, la diaspora juive occidentale se vit contrainte de se remettre en question face à une Allemagne et uen Europe mues par un romantisme frelaté.
Malgré leur profond sentiment d'appartenance à la nation allemande, Haber ainsi que les grandes figures intellectuelles juives qu'il fréquentait furent lors des premiers signes d'enlisement du conflit, assimilés à une ploutocratie cosmopolite antinationale en songeant qu'au profit. Ce troisième tome s'attarde sur cette funeste année 1915, où un certain esprit allemand voyait l'héroïsme de ses aigles corrompu par des vautours entraînant la patrie vers sa perte.
