Privacy policy
This policy explains what personal data Sell Books Limited collects when you use sellbooks.co.uk, why we hold it, who we share it with, and what rights you have. We are the data controller for that information.
Who we are
Sell Books Limited, registered in England and Wales.
Company number: 06853634
Registered office: Martin House, Unit 2, Downs Road, London E5 8QJ, United Kingdom
Data protection enquiries: london@sellbooks.co.uk
What we collect
- Order information — your name, delivery address, billing address, email address and telephone number, and details of what you bought.
- Payment information — handled by our payment providers. We receive confirmation that a payment succeeded and the last four digits and type of card. We never see or store your full card number.
- Account information — if you create an account, your login details and saved addresses.
- Correspondence — emails and messages you send us, and our replies.
- Technical information — IP address, device and browser type, and pages visited, collected by our shop platform so the site works and to measure how it is used.
Why we hold it, and our lawful basis
| Purpose | Lawful basis |
|---|---|
| Taking payment, sending your order, dealing with returns and enquiries | Performance of our contract with you |
| Keeping records of sales for tax and accounting | Compliance with a legal obligation |
| Preventing and investigating fraud, and keeping the site secure | Our legitimate interests |
| Understanding how the shop is used so we can improve it | Our legitimate interests |
| Sending marketing emails | Your consent, which you may withdraw at any time |
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have considered whether those interests are overridden by your rights, and concluded they are not. You may object to that processing — see Your rights below.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for anyone else's marketing. We share it only with organisations that help us run the shop:
- Shopify, which hosts our shop and processes orders and payments.
- Delivery carriers — currently Royal Mail, Whistl and Asendia — which receive the name, delivery address and, where a service needs it, an email address or telephone number for delivery notifications.
- Our shipping and order-handling systems, which we operate ourselves and which hold delivery details so we can pick, pack and track your order.
- Our accountants, and HMRC, for sales records.
- Professional advisers, law enforcement or regulators, where we are legally required to disclose information.
Transfers outside the UK
Some of our providers, including Shopify, process data outside the United Kingdom. Where that happens we rely on the safeguards permitted by UK data protection law — an adequacy decision covering the receiving country, or standard contractual clauses with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum. You may ask us for details of the safeguards that apply.
How long we keep it
- Order and transaction records — six years after the end of the financial year in which the order was placed, which is the period we must keep records for tax purposes.
- Account information — until you ask us to close your account.
- Marketing contact details — until you unsubscribe or ask us to stop.
- Correspondence — normally two years after the matter is resolved.
Cookies
Our shop uses cookies that are strictly necessary for it to work — remembering your basket, keeping you signed in, and completing checkout securely. These cannot be switched off without breaking the site.
Our shop platform also sets cookies that measure how the site is used, so we can see which pages work and which do not. You can control non-essential cookies through the cookie settings on our site, and you can block or delete any cookie through your browser settings.
Marketing
We will only send you marketing emails if you have asked us to, or if you have bought from us and we are telling you about similar books. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also email us to opt out at any time. Opting out of marketing does not stop emails about an order you have placed. If you start a checkout but do not complete it, we may send you one reminder email about the books you left, with an unsubscribe link.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- ask us to erase your data, where we have no continuing reason to hold it;
- ask us to restrict how we use it while a concern is resolved;
- receive data you gave us in a portable form, or have it sent to another provider;
- object to processing we carry out on the basis of legitimate interests; and
- withdraw consent at any time, where we rely on consent.
To exercise any of these, email london@sellbooks.co.uk. We will respond within one month. There is no charge, and we may ask you to confirm your identity first.
Some rights are qualified. We may not be able to erase data we must keep for tax purposes, for example, but we will explain our reasoning if we refuse a request.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK supervisory authority:

We may update this policy. The version published on this page is the one that applies. Where a change materially affects how we use your data, we will tell you.
