Gordon Cloade est mort fort à propos sous les décombres de sa villa ravagée par le Blitz. Il laisse à sa jeune veuve, Rosaleen, une fortune colossale et cela, évidemment, ne fait pas l'affaire du clan Cloade qui se voit, d'un seul coup, spolié par l'intruse. Or le bruit court que le premier mari de Rosaleen ne serait pas mort, ce qui, bien entendu, aurait pour effet d'annuler le second mariage... Ces situations troubles sont pain bénit pour les maîtres chanteurs. En voici justement un qui fait chanter la jeune femme. Pas très longtemps: en lui portant son breakfast, la petite bonne de l'auberge où l'individu est descendu trouvera, dans sa chambre, un bien vilain spectacle...
