Shabbat - Why? the Biblical Origin of the Sabbath Laws
Low stock: 1 left
"Shabbat - Why?" is a book for the general reader rather than for the scholar. The Biblical injunction concerning the Sabbath is generally taken as a cryptic reference, itself without meaning, to a series of unconnected laws supplied only by oral tradition. The author, Alan Smith, disagrees. He shows that understanding the words of the Biblical text correctly, and not as generally taught, enables most of the laws in the Talmud attributed to the Torah to be deduced from the text itself. As a result, the entire concept of the Sabbath as taught needs to be revised. The laws then cease to be unconnected, illogical and unacceptable to the 'man in the street'. Other matters connected with the Sabbath and with the Festivals overall are explained within this approach. Rabbinic additions to the Sabbath laws are merely referred to, in general terms only, at the end.

Condition Descriptions
Our conditions mean the following:
- New - a brand new book
- Almost New - appears new but is actually secondhand.
- Very Good - only minor imperfections such as minor scuffs to edge or cover or a price written in pencil or shop sticker.
- Standard Secondhand - Clearly been read before, but not too bad. We do not recommend these for gifting. Spines usually creased. Could also include creases or folds to cover, some writing such as in the cover or elsewhere, underlining or highlighting, but might not do. Possibly some stains or marks. Similar in general to books in any secondhand shop or charity shop.
- Poor Condition - Usually this will have a specific problem such as writing inside, water damage, missing dust jacket, heavy staining, large creases or cuts. These are readable copies but not nice ones. On other websites this condition is called 'Acceptable' or 'Fair' , but we want to be more honest.
