Memoirs of a Jew from Innsbruck, Austria, born in 1928 as Ernst David Haber. Describes antisemitism in Austria in the 1930s. Ben-Dor's father, Moses Haber, a well-known physician, obtained visas for the family and they moved to Kovno, Lithuania, in 1938. After the German occupation in 1941, his family was allowed to remain outside the ghetto due to his father's prominent position and connections. Dr. Haber cooperated with the Nazis, preparing lists for the Gestapo. The family was forced into the ghetto in August 1942, but enjoyed special privileges. Ben-Dor discusses the role of Jewish collaborators in the ghetto, as well as in the camps, bemoaning their lack of Jewish values. In July 1944 the Habers were transported by boat to Stutthof. Ben-Dor's mother and brother were sent to Auschwitz and killed; Ben-Dor was sent to Kaufering; his father, whom he despised, became a kapo at one of the Kaufering camps and was shot by Allied planes during an evacuation. Ben-Dor was liberated in April 1945 and emigrated to Israel in 1948.
