Black Londoners

Format: Paperback

Condition: Standard Secondhand — £6.76
What do the conditions mean?

Our conditions mean the following:

  • New - a brand new book
  • Almost New - appears new but is actually secondhand.
  • Very Good - only minor imperfections such as minor scuffs to edge or cover or a price written in pencil or shop sticker.
  • Standard Secondhand - Clearly been read before, but not too bad. We do not recommend these for gifting. Spines usually creased. Could also include creases or folds to cover, some writing such as in the cover or elsewhere, underlining or highlighting, but might not do. Possibly some stains or marks. Similar in general to books in any secondhand shop or charity shop.
  • Poor Condition - Usually this will have a specific problem such as writing inside, water damage, missing dust jacket, heavy staining, large creases or cuts. These are readable copies but not nice ones. On other websites this condition is called 'Acceptable' or 'Fair' , but we want to be more honest.

The photographs that have been selected for this book trace the relationship of London to her black citizens over the last 100 years, chronicling the working lives of ordinary members of the black community. The late nineteenth century and especially the period after World War II saw the most rapid expansion of London's black population. This visual record shows the many-sided contribution of black people to the British capital. Hairdressers and barbers, cafe owners, business men and women, technicians, transport and council workers, nurses, doctors and lawyers. The celebrates too the careers of famous members of the black population, the scientists, community leaders and activists, artists, writers, musicians and statesmen who have left an indelible mark on the city. This book will be of real interest to African-Caribbean people living in London and elsewhere in Britain, aand to anyone who is keen to understand the multicultural makeup of the capital.
