We have all heard the saying 'no one is perfect.' This is a truly robust assertion that qualifies us as human beings. Interestingly, when we scratch beyond the surface of this well known saying we uncover something distinctly noteworthy for all to glean from. Based on the fact that no one is perfect - we can further, with quiet confidence, purport that no husband or wife is perfect. As elementary as it may seem, this brings us to the concluding foundation that no marriage is perfect! James 3:2 says "...For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body." We are yet to meet that one person that does not stumble by the words they speak. Amidst the smiles and admiration that our marriage attracts - we are fully convicted of our frail dusty frames and fractured personalities. We call ourselves an African boy and an African girl upon whom God has carefully and regularly sprinkled masses of grace. With His grace we are who we are! We vehemently refuse the applause of men and point passionately to God, our gracious Lord and keeper of our home. There is no marriage made in heaven either - there is no need for it there. We have since discovered it is what we bring into our marriage that gives it the experience of heaven (peace) or hell (chaos)! We have this as our confidence - no marriage is perfect, BUT we have a perfect God, with His perfect Word to help our marriages. Hallelujah! With all our prayers and divine yearnings, and all good works in abundance, we passionately commend you to seek God for your marriage and move from expecting perfection from each other and begin to connect, both with God, His Word and with each other. This is one of the vital tools of our 30-year-old marriage: connection and not perfection.
