What do the conditions mean?
Our conditions mean the following:
- New - a brand new book
- Almost New - appears new but is actually secondhand.
- Very Good - only minor imperfections such as minor scuffs to edge or cover or a price written in pencil or shop sticker.
- Standard Secondhand - Clearly been read before, but not too bad. We do not recommend these for gifting. Spines usually creased. Could also include creases or folds to cover, some writing such as in the cover or elsewhere, underlining or highlighting, but might not do. Possibly some stains or marks. Similar in general to books in any secondhand shop or charity shop.
- Poor Condition - Usually this will have a specific problem such as writing inside, water damage, missing dust jacket, heavy staining, large creases or cuts. These are readable copies but not nice ones. On other websites this condition is called 'Acceptable' or 'Fair' , but we want to be more honest.

Peter Hall's diaries start in spring 1972, just after he had been approached to succeed Lord Olivier as Director of Britain's National Theatre, which was then preparing the historic move from the Old Vic to its new home, the three-auditorium "palace" on London's South Bank. They finish in January 1980, "the end of the beginning of the new building". Sir Peter tells the story of the eight hectic years in between. He describes his delicate situation with Olivier; how he worled with Richardson, Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Pinter, osborne, Jonathan Miller and many others. His diaries uniquely reveal what it is like to be head of a great artistic enterprise under burning public scrutiny; and they cover an extremely dramatic period which includes the constant delays to the opening of the South Bank building, resignations, press attacks, strikes, and Hall's special -- and sometimes difficult -- relationship with th eRSC which he founded. These conflicts had repercussions throughout the entire theatre world, and Hall's picture of the crises, successes and personality clashes of which he was the centre is frank, and unfailingly absorbing.
