What do the conditions mean?
Our conditions mean the following:
- New - a brand new book
- Almost New - appears new but is actually secondhand.
- Very Good - only minor imperfections such as minor scuffs to edge or cover or a price written in pencil or shop sticker.
- Standard Secondhand - Clearly been read before, but not too bad. We do not recommend these for gifting. Spines usually creased. Could also include creases or folds to cover, some writing such as in the cover or elsewhere, underlining or highlighting, but might not do. Possibly some stains or marks. Similar in general to books in any secondhand shop or charity shop.
- Poor Condition - Usually this will have a specific problem such as writing inside, water damage, missing dust jacket, heavy staining, large creases or cuts. These are readable copies but not nice ones. On other websites this condition is called 'Acceptable' or 'Fair' , but we want to be more honest.

Evelyn is a Shifty - Identified as a potential candidate as a child in an AI orphanage, and later selected for Specialist Highly Immersive Field Training by a secretive organisation.
The purpose: a five-year secondment in time!
As her deployment draws near though, she begins to suspect the motivations of the organisation are not exactly as they claim, and her own post-shift prospects may not be either!
From her hiding place in DOWNTIME, she risks her fugitives' anonymity for a curious look at the next Shift. What she witnesses sets in motion a journey that could decide humanity's fate as she sets out to uncover the dangerous self-interests of her superiors.

'DOWNTIME SHIFT is an intriguing and complex work of science fiction by Robert Holding. Set in the twenty-first and twenty-ninth centuries, it paints a frightening picture of a future in which mankind is totally controlled by artificial intelligence. Evelyn, the main character, is a 'Shifty', that is someone who has been trained to survive and carry out tasks for the 'EYE' when travelling 800 years into the planet's past to alter its future for the better. Questioning these tasks, Evelyn returns to her own time to find that many of the remaining population want to take back control of their lives, but also that the 'EYE' has more forces under her control than had been reckoned with. This is a very challenging read on many levels and so plausible in general that it is truly terrifying. The characters are well-defined and the plot fast-paced. The author does leave us with a light at the end of the turbulent tunnel though. I would certainly recommend this book, especially to anyone feeling disillusioned with the way modern life seems to be heading.'
