Edith's Book

Condition: Standard Secondhand — £1.79
What do the conditions mean?

Our conditions mean the following:

  • New - a brand new book
  • Almost New - appears new but is actually secondhand.
  • Very Good - only minor imperfections such as minor scuffs to edge or cover or a price written in pencil or shop sticker.
  • Standard Secondhand - Clearly been read before, but not too bad. We do not recommend these for gifting. Spines usually creased. Could also include creases or folds to cover, some writing such as in the cover or elsewhere, underlining or highlighting, but might not do. Possibly some stains or marks. Similar in general to books in any secondhand shop or charity shop.
  • Poor Condition - Usually this will have a specific problem such as writing inside, water damage, missing dust jacket, heavy staining, large creases or cuts. These are readable copies but not nice ones. On other websites this condition is called 'Acceptable' or 'Fair' , but we want to be more honest.

Memoirs of Velmans (née van Hessen), born in The Hague in 1925, who survived the Holocaust under false identity papers, living with a non-Jewish family in the town of Breda. Her rescuers were Egbert and Tine zur Kleinsmiede (who in 1983 were awarded the title of Righteous Gentile by Yad Vashem). Velmans' family had visas to leave Germany, but only her brother Guus left; he was the only other survivor of the family. Velmans' brother Jules was caught trying to escape and sent to prison and then to a death camp in Poland. Her mother was taken from a hospital to Westerbork and then, with her mother, to Sobibor, where they were gassed in May 1943. Velmans learned of all these deaths only after her liberation on 29 October 1944. She then resumed her own identity, after two years of living under the name of Nettie Schierboom. The postwar period was marked by weddings, Velmans' own and those of two women whose families had helped Jews during the war and who married two of Velmans' cousins.
