Faber Book of Utopias

Format: Paperback

Condition: Standard Secondhand — £2.51
What do the conditions mean?

Our conditions mean the following:

  • New - a brand new book
  • Almost New - appears new but is actually secondhand.
  • Very Good - only minor imperfections such as minor scuffs to edge or cover or a price written in pencil or shop sticker.
  • Standard Secondhand - Clearly been read before, but not too bad. We do not recommend these for gifting. Spines usually creased. Could also include creases or folds to cover, some writing such as in the cover or elsewhere, underlining or highlighting, but might not do. Possibly some stains or marks. Similar in general to books in any secondhand shop or charity shop.
  • Poor Condition - Usually this will have a specific problem such as writing inside, water damage, missing dust jacket, heavy staining, large creases or cuts. These are readable copies but not nice ones. On other websites this condition is called 'Acceptable' or 'Fair' , but we want to be more honest.

John Carey is an acclaimed critic and editor of the bestselling The Faber Book of Science and The Faber Book of Reportage. In his spellbinding new anthology he charts the course of a host of imaginary societies, combining a broad historical sweep with lively variety. We hear from Homer and Marx, Swift and Rousseau, de Sade and Oscar Wilde, Hitler and George Orwell, Italo Calvino and Julian Barnes. Utopias come in every conceivable cultural - and sexual - shade: communist, fascist, anarchist, green, golden age techno-fantastic, all-male, all-female, all-hermaphrodite. The Faber Book of Utopias encompasses some noble and selfless schemes, lofty in their estimate of human potential. But the history of utopias is also spine-chilling in the trail of folly and tyranny it uncovers.

Appropriately for a new millennium, this book presents the hopes and fears of humanity from 4,000 years ago till now.
