Londoner Steve Diamond is diagnosed with terminal leukaemia just as his closest friend, Toby, is sent to work at top-secret Porton Down in Wiltshire. Toby discovers, not only that Die Glocke exists, but that it is hidden at Porton Down and that it WAS successfully used to move backwards in time. Sadly, the one person to have used the machine died of cancer shortly after his trip back to 1920 - the conclusion being that whilst Die Glocke works, it is also dangerous. But Steve, already fighting cancer, realises that he has nothing to lose by volunteering himself. Time travel, however, is a moral and ethical minefield, and Diamond is adamant that he would only travel backwards in time to do two things - 1, to save The Doors' front-man, Jim Morrison, from dying of a drugs overdose in a nightclub in 1970 and 2, prevent his hero Oscar Wilde from dying in a Paris hotel in 1900. Surely, neither of those would change the fabric of the world. But after saving both Morrison and Wilde, he realises he is wrong. Much has changed in the world he returns to and now he must find out why...
