After four decades of starting out at the low end of the music scene on bass guitar, Alfie Noakes is still down there. Weekend warrior, part-time rock god, call him what you will, and drummers will. Fortunately, he’s taken time out from playing Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed Girl et al, and not playing any AC/DC, to tell us all about his journey, in this often hilarious book. If you’ve ever played in a covers band, or hope to, or are just curious about this world of theirs, get reading. As well as the escapades, disasters, irritations, some highs and an awful lot of fun that he shares with us, he also passes on the knowledge and tips that he’s learnt over this time. These may or may not be helpful, but they too are often just very very funny. As his mother said, after watching him and his band play for the first time – it only took her 35 years – “Actually, you’re not that bad”. He has now returned to the world of amateur musos and pushes on to achieve mediocrity in his mother’s eyes, and also to rattle up another four decades of stories and scrapes for the follow-on book. In the meantime, we can all enjoy this honest, heart-warming, insightful and amusing tome to the bass tone and cover bands.
