The Crimean War is remembered not only for the troops bravery but also for the outdated, inept administration of the army, and for Florence Nightingale and the horrors of Scutari. The army was completely unprepared for the ravages of disease and winter. Shortage of medical staff led to the establishment of a civil hospital for the military. This is the story of the long-forgotten but extraordinary achievement of quickly designing, prefabricating, shipping and constucting a purpose-built hospital in Turkey near the site of ancient Troy, surprisingly 400 miles from the Crimean battlefields. It was the first of its kind in the world. The book features two men who made an outstanding contribution to the success of the hospital - Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Dr. Edmund Parkes. Brunel, at the height of his career, showed an extraordinary grasp of hospital design, making the comfort of the patient his priority. He designed a spacious and sanitary hospital which was transported on seventeen ships. The other was the exceptionally able Medical Superintendent, Dr.Parkes, who came to be known as the Father of Hygiene , transforming the subject into a scientific discipline. Renkioi Hospital was a step towards the Army Medical Services adoption of prevention of disease and promotion of health as its main aim. This book describes the circumstances in which a civil hospital was designed, transported to and connstructed in Turkey in a few months. It is a very clear account of every aspect of a Victorian hospital set in unusual circumstances. Everyday life is well described, both in the working of the hospital and away from it. Hospital staff had the time to take part in the first organised excavations at Troy before Schliemann. The book is for medical historians, those with an interest in Brunel and the Crimean War as well as more general readers.
