The fight against racism, we attempt to show, in words and pictures, how Asian and Afro-Caribbean peoples have resisted and organized against such racism since the Second World War-creating at different times and in differing areas new forms and traditions of struggle in Britain.

This is the fourth in our series of anti-racist educational books for young people-a series which was initially prompted by our realization that the propagation and development of multi-cultural education did nothing to tackle the fundamental issue of racism.

We had pointed out to the Rampton (subsequently Swann) Committee that 'while multicultural studies may, in explaining differences in customs and cultures, help to modify attitudes, such studies are primarily an extension of existing educational techniques and methods, and, as such, allow racism within society, and within the educational system, to pass unchallenged. And education itself comes to be seen in terms of an adjustment process within a racist society and not as a force for changing the values that make that society racist.. Just to learn about other people's cultures is not to learn about the racism of one's own. To learn about the racism of one's own culture, on the other hand, is to approach other cultures objectively'.
