This book is the result of considerable personal experience and many years of research. Surprisingly, there has never been a book anywhere which covers the entire field of stickmaking although there have been several covering narrow sections of the craft. Stickdressing, a much more specialised but closely related field, has been covered but not to the extent of listing the very wide range of native woods that are available in England. The fact that both stickmaking and stickdressing are experiencing a thorough revival is evidenced by the formation early in 1984 of The British Stickmakers Guild, a group whose prime function is to provide a focal point for the exchange of information on this very wide subject and to provide a link for those involved in this craft. Remember that you do not have to be old or infirm to carry a stick. It makes a jolly good companion, can keep all sorts of dogs at bay…and doesn’t even talk back!

Our conditions mean the following:
- New - a brand new book
- Almost New - appears new but is actually secondhand.
- Very Good - only minor imperfections such as minor scuffs to edge or cover or price price written in pencil or shop sticker.
- Standard Secondhand - Clearly been read before, but not too bad. We do not recommend these for gifting. Spines usually creased. Could also include creases or folds to cover, some writing such as in the cover or elsewhere, underlining or highlighting, but might not do. Possibly some stains or marks. Similar in general to books in any secondhand shop or charity shop.
- Poor Condition - Usually this will have a specific problem such as writing inside, water damage, missing dust jacket, heavy staining, large creases or cuts. These are readable copies but not nice ones. On other websites this condition is called 'Acceptable' or 'Fair' , but we want to be more honest.
